SYMPOSIUM: NMR Advancement in Quality Control and Compendial Applications 10:15 AM – 11:45 AM Grand Ballroom 2 Chairs: Quanyin Gao, Herbalife Manufacturing, LLC Peter Chang, Herbalife International of America Inc. Gabriel Gianscaspro, U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) 10:20 AM NMR Advancements: Compendia Applications Gabriel Giancaspro, U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) NMR technology and its application in USP monograph is reviewed and future development for expending its role in identification and quantitation will be presented. 10:40 AM 101 Uses for NMR in Your Home Kristie Adams, Steelyard Analytics, Inc., Bernd Diehl, Spectral Service AG NMR spectroscopy is a particularly powerful analytical tool that is finally gaining well-deserved attention for its advantages and versatility over a wide range of applications. In this presentation, I will show you how NMR spectroscopy can be applied to items that many of us use or encounter over the course of a single day. From compendial applications to recent advancements, to ques- tions you didn’t even know NMR could answer, this presentation is designed to get you thinking: If NMR can do all of this, what can it do for me? 11:00 AM NMR Advancements: Food and Dietary Supplement Product’s Applications Congmei Cao, Silva Babajanian, Yanjun Zhang, Peter Chang, Gary Swanson, Herbalife International of America Inc., Quanyin Gao, Herbalife Manufacturing, LLC NMR is a unique tool for analysis. Compared to the spectro- scopic and chromatographic technologies such as HPLC, LC-MS, UV and IR, NMR is an advanced and efficient technique that provides lot more and repeatable information for analysis with a simple nondestructive sample preparation. It reveals the types and relative amount of atoms present in a sample, the specific environments of atoms, the purity and composition, as well as constitutional and conformational structural information about a molecule. All this information, in NMR spectrum, could be easily and directly interpreted with the help of software. In Herbalife Nutrition, NMR is applied for identification of botanical materials and quantitation of chemical markers in those materials. It is used for identification tests of Aloe vera raw materials and finished products in both powder and liquid forms. It is also used for characterization and differentiation of similar tea extract materials. Their similarities and differences could be determined by NMR together with statistical analysis. Another example of NMR application is quantitation of rebaudiosides in

stevia materials is used as an example. In addition, NMR is also being evaluated for determination of other chemical constituents of food and dietary supplement products. 11:20 AM NMR Advancements: From Diverse Instrumentation to a Variety of Applications Amy Freund, Manfred Spraul, Bruker Corporation The application of NMR spectroscopy for identification and quantification of complex materials, or individual components in complex mixtures has increased in recent years based on advancements in probe sensitivity as well as an increase in analysis tools for the deconvolution of complex data. In this presentation I will highlight the advancements in probe technol- ogy that have increased NMR sensitivity by a factor of 4 or 5 in the last 10 years. I will also highlight deconvolution and spectral matching tools that enable the identification and quantification of small molecule components of complex mixtures. Lastly, I will highlight tools for daily qualification of the NMR spectrometer so that results from quantification can be trusted. TDRM SYMPOSIUM: Reference Material Needs for Food Safety 10:15 AM – 11:45 AM Plaza F Chairs: Melissa Phillips, U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology Laura Wood, U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology 10:15 AM Are My Controls Sufficient, Overkill or Just Right for My Testing Needs? The Role of (Certified) Reference Materials and QC Organisms in a Controls and (certified) reference materials play a vital role in laboratory testing. While the analytical world has a well-defined approach to implementing reference materials in their testing, inconsistencies exist when determining the appropriate applica- tion of reference materials in microbiology laboratories. Due to these differences, microbiology laboratories often have many questions about the selection and use of controls for their testing: Are internally prepared controls or standards sufficient for my analysis? Are my test controls equivalent to reference standards? Which of my test methods require standards in addition to inter- nal test method controls? What constitutes a certified reference material and when do I need to use it? Does the recent update to ISO 17025 affect how my laboratory classifies and uses reference materials? This presentation will discuss the types of controls and reference materials used in microbiology laborato- ries and the roles they play, including establishing the validity of data, ensuring methods are performing correctly, and verifying the training of analysts.
