AOAC 2017 Annual Meeting Preliminary Program

CO-CHAIR: Barry McCleary, Megazyme • Joanne Slavin, University of Minnesota The New U.S. Dietary Fiber Regulations and Demonstrating the Physiological Benefits of Fiber • Yannis Vrasidas, Eurofins Sialic Acid and its Analysis • Barry McCleary, Megazyme A Collaborative Study on the Updated Dietary Fiber Method • Parastoo Azadi, University of Georgia Analysis of Chondroitin and Related Glycosaminoglycans • David Plank, Medallion Laboratories/General Mills New Analytical Methods for Assisting with 2018 FDA Compliance Oral Posters from Dietary Supplements and Botanicals This session is dedicated to all those who participate and present their work in the form of posters at the 131st AOAC INTERNATIONAL Annual Meeting. This is a meeting of peers and only quality work is channeled through for presentations. The proposed session is an effort to showcase presenters from select posters in botanical and dietary supplements category. There will be four to five presenters who will be selected by a special jury panel of peers and will be invited to present their work as a full oral presentation in this session. The names of the selected presenters will be disclosed at a later date and included in the AOAC Final Program. This type of session has already started a new trend in AOAC by offering an opportunity to new scientists to present their work to a diverse audience. CHAIR: Amit Chandra, AMWAY TDLM/TDRM Symposium: The Impact of FSMA on Your Laboratory With FSMA, laboratories are receiving requests for activities that are new to them. They are being asked to implement new procedures. They have to produce more information and different information. How do you manage these new demands on your existing laboratory? This session will present what some of these new requests are and why they are new. Then suggested approaches for managing them will be presented. For example, does the new requirement mean you will need to train staff or is the existing skill set in your staff adequate?

FSMA requires the use of Preventative Controls. These are understood in terms of the food industry in general; however, what does Preventative Controls mean for your laboratory? This session will focus not only on describing these new requirements, but will suggest ways and techniques for you to manage these changes for your laboratory. CHAIR: Brad Stawick, Microbac Laboratories, Inc. • John Szpylka, Mérieux NutriSciences — Silliker The Role of Chemistry Testing Laboratories in FSMA Compliance • Brad Stawick, Microbac Laboratories, Inc. Common Microbiology Requests Related to FSMA • John Budin, FONA International Impact of FSMA on the Testing Laboratory: Perspectives from a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM New Mycotoxin Challenges: Occurrence and Detection Current legislation has set maximum and/or guidance levels for mycotoxins to protect consumers from their toxic effects, depending on the region. These legislations only cover toxins with well-known toxic effects, such as aflatoxins, fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, and others. In recent years, modern analytical techniques have made the determination of various other fungal metabolites possible. These so- called emerging mycotoxins as well as masked or modified mycotoxins have been shown to occur frequently in agricultural commodities. Their full effects on human and animal health have not been determined at this time. In addition, as maximum levels are currently not set for these emerging toxins, these compounds may represent a threat to humans and animals. This session will give insights on the global occurrence of these emerging and masked/modified mycotoxins. Furthermore, current data on their effects will be discussed and currently available detection methods and new methods under development will be presented. Finally, ways to protect the consumers with risk assessments and the setting of maximum levels will be discussed.
