Presentation of 2019 Harvey W. Wiley Award Recipient

Background and Discussion Each year it is the responsibility of the Harvey W. Wiley Award Committee to select the following year’s award recipient. The selection is made a year in advance to allow adequate time for the Annual Meeting Program Committee to develop the annual Wiley Award Symposium, and to ensure that the recipient will be available to attend the meeting at which the award is presented. I am pleased to announce that the committee has selected Dr. Joseph Betz as the 2019 Harvey W. Wiley Award recipient. Dr. Betz is currently the Director of the Analytical Methods and Reference Materials (AMRM) program at National Institutes of Health – Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH-ODS). He is being recognized for his significant contributions to research and development of analytical methods and certified reference materials (CRM) to support quality analytical measurements within the dietary supplement community. His collaboration expanded from botanical dietary supplements to nutritionals health assessment markers in human serum. He has worked closely with all stakeholders within the global dietary supplement community, including AOAC INTERNATIONAL. Dr. Betz has been an active member of AOAC for nearly 30 years. As a recipient of the Harvey W. Wiley Award, Dr. Betz will receive a cash prize of $5,000.00 USD, a plaque presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Denver, Colorado; expenses incident to attending the meeting, and the opportunity to discuss his area of expertise during the Wiley Award Symposium at the Annual Meeting and Exposition. Although the award selection is made a year in advance for planning purposes, a general announcement of Dr. Betz’s selection will not be made until January 2019 , as to not detract from the current year’s award recipient.
