Aims for economic gain in an illicit manner Meant to be hidden / not to be discovered Misrepresents the food product to consumers
• US FDA Working definition of “Economically Motivated Adulteration” (EMA)
The fraudulent, intentional substitution or addition of a substance in a product for the purpose of increasing the apparent value of the product, or reducing the cost of its production, i.e. for economic gain.

Taskforce Recommendations
• Identified Areas of Work in support of availability and standardization of analytical methods to be used by food industry and regulators : Non Targeted Testing (NTT) : Methods used to support authenticity of a given ingredient without targeting a specific adulterant – rely on methodological signature (characteristics) of the ingredient(s) Targeted Testing (TT): Methods that target the presence of a given adulterant in an ingredient (e.g. Melamine in Milk) • Two (2) Working Groups to Address these aspects
