General Information Salmonella is widely dispersed in nature and is spread via the fecal/oral route 1 . According to the CDC 2 , Salmonella species are responsible for about 48 million cases of food borne illness each year. Salmonella is found in a wide variety of foods including: Meats, poultry, eggs, milk and dairy products, fish, shrimp, spices, yeast, coconut, sauces, cream-filled desserts, peanut butter, cocoa , produce (fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, and cantaloupes), and chocolate 1 .
