3 Introduction
Human milk is the most complete form of nutrition for infants, containing extremely low concentrations of fluoride (< 0.01 mg/kg) 1 . The fluoride concentrations in infant formulas are controlled at low levels. However, consumption of powdered or liquid-concentrate infant formulas with fluoridated water may lead to excessive fluoride intake. The recommended maximum fluoride intake for infants under 6 months is ranging from 0.01 to 0.7 mg/day 1 . In order to address this concern, a standard method performance requirement (SMPR) was developed for fluoride with regard to infant formula and adult nutrition by AOAC International. In response, a straightforward and robust analytical method for the determination of free fluoride in infant formula has been developed.
