The calculated p -value of 0.10 indicates that there is no statistically significant difference found between the reference method and the candidate method.

A Bland-Altman plot is used to visualize the differences in measurements between two different instruments or two different measurement techniques. It can be used to visually assess how similar a new method is against a current method (Figure 3).

Recovery at typical sample concentrations In a recovery study, a sample of similar composition to a routine sample is analysed in its original state and also after being spiked with a known amount of analyte. The measured recovery, reported as percent, is the proportion of the amount of analyte, present in or added to the sample, which is extracted and measured in an analytical method. Recovery was evaluated using an adult nutritional formula with a low concentration of taurine. Each replicate was spiked at three concentration levels: low (~0.7 mg hg − 1 ), medium (~7 mg hg − 1 ), and high (~70 mg hg − 1 ). Spiked and unspiked samples were analysed in triplicate on three separate days (Table 10; Eqns 25–26; Appendix H).

Average method recoveries were estimated from 97.2–100.1 % are within the limits in SMPR 2014.013 and consistent with those expected at ~10 mg hg − 1 concentration (80–115 %) [9].
