AOAC SPIFAN Stakeholder Panel Meeting Book (March 12, 2020)

AOAC policy requires

• Methods with no evidence of use for two (2) after adoption to be repealed • Methods with no evidence of reproducibility assessment during the 2 years after adoption to be repealed

Unfinished Business

SPIFAN & Nutrient Methods ERP

• Focus was to down select to one method per nutrient using MLT as a milestone • Demonstrating reproducibility was not an expectation of the non-down selected First Action OMAs • Reality – many of the methods submitted were already in use to some extent • Even more methods in the OMA infant formula chapter that need consideration • 6 methods were recommended and repealed

• Do these non-Codex AOAC SPIFAN OMAs still have utility? • Do they require recognition as Official Methods of Analysis ? • If yes, does the recognition of Final Action status have meaning in support of their utility or does it matter? • How important is demonstrating reproducibility for these methods? • Is it necessary to be specific and articulate the criteria that these methods do meet since they don’t meet the Intended Use requirement for the SMPRs that SPIFAN developed

Questions to Be Addressed

• Are these methods being used?

• Where, how & why are they being used? • How are the methods performing?

• AOAC Policy Components

• Being addressed in OMB
