Brief Background • 2014 Working group for Chloride and Fluoride developed and SPIFAN approved SMPR 2014.016. – Call for Methods issued – no methods – 2015 – Call for Methods extended – 1 method submitted. Method did not meet SMPR • Potential methods that could meet the SMPR are available, but not applied to infant formula – Microwave digesting, F-ISE or spectrophotometry detection – Derivitization and GC-FID/MS • Codex STAN: Fluoride < 100g/100 kcal (<65ug/100g* w=reconstituted infant formula) • Australia and New Zealand requirements: 50ug /100g in powder (corresponding to current LOQ = 5ug/100g in SMPR)
