False Positive/False Negative Rates/Sensitivity vs. Probability of Detection (POD)

Background

 The terms “false positive rates”, “false negative rates”, and “sensitivity” have been, and are still being used, to describe the number of incorrect positive or negative results that a qualitative method produces, and the lowest level of detection, respectively. These terms and concepts are used for both qualitative chemistry and microbiology methods, but are particularly entrenched in the microbiology.
