False Positive/False Negative Rates/Sensitivity vs. Probability of Detection (POD)
Background
The terms “false positive rates”, “false negative rates”, and “sensitivity” have been, and are still being used, to describe the number of incorrect positive or negative results that a qualitative method produces, and the lowest level of detection, respectively. These terms and concepts are used for both qualitative chemistry and microbiology methods, but are particularly entrenched in the microbiology.
