Clarification on Number of Calibration Points

Background  A method for measurement of 2-MCPD, 3-MCPD and glycidols was reviewed by the MCPD Expert Review Panel on March 14, 2018. The primary and secondary reviewers were satisfied that the method met the minimum performance requirements. However, a reviewer mentioned that the method specifies only one calibration point. This observation started a discussion about the minimum number of calibration points that should be required in a method.  A number of well-respected chemists opined that a method, any method, using a single calibration point is riskier in terms of accuracy than a method, any method, that requires multiple calibration points. The method author pointed out that the data supporting the method, which was acknowledged by the reviewers to be more than adequate to demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the method, was collected using the single point calibration method.
