To:

From:

Subject:

Codex STAN 234 Effort

BACKGROUND  Last June, Darryl Sullivan and John Szpylka updated the OMB on activities of the most recent Codex  Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) and the Interagency Meeting (IAM).  Based  on their summary of the meetings and the outcomes of the IAM, they made a proposal to OMB to  spearhead a multi‐year international effort that would ultimately result in an updated Codex standard  for methods of analysis and sampling (Codex STAN 234), but also a framework by which the standard  could be maintained with the participation of all organizations with methods referenced in the Codex  standard.  The OMB accepted an opportunity to spearhead the effort, beginning with developing a  framework for reviewing the methods in Codex STAN 234.  The initial objective began with reviewing  the AOAC methods in the Milk and Milk Products section of the Codex standard and building a model.   The OMB formed a working group consisting of Joe Boison, Esther Campos Gimenez, Erin Crowley,  Don Gilliland, Sidney Sudberg and chaired by Melissa Phillips.  Both Darryl Sullivan and John Szpylka  serve as advisors to the working group.  WORKING GROUP ACTIVITIES  The working group has held five (5) teleconferences and offline, members of the working group have  reviewed the standard, redrafted the standard, drafted a rubric by which to review methods,  previewed the AOAC methods for milk and milk products referenced in the standard, recruited milk  experts to provide feedback on the rubric.  The most recent teleconference, held on February 22,  2018, included milk experts who reviewed AOAC methods using the rubric, with the purpose of  providing feedback on the rubric.  Some suggestions were made regarding specific items on the rubric  in an electronic format, but for the most part, the rubric seemed to work well and require only minor  revisions.

Five (5) renowned international Milk Experts were recruited:   David Barbano (Cornell University, USA)   Hans Cruijsen (FrieslandCampina, Netherlands)   Jaap Evers (Fonterra and IDF, New Zealand)

 Roberto Galluzzo (Nestle, Switzerland)   Brenden Gill (Fonterra, New Zealand)
