Meeting Minutes

I.

Welcome and Introductions

AOAC Executive Director Bradford opened the meeting and led introductions before introducing the SPSFAM Chair, Dr. Erik Konings. Konings requested motions to approve the March 16, 2015 agenda as well as the September 7, 2014 Meeting Minutes.

MOTION to approve the March 16, 2015 SPSFAM Meeting Agenda (Szpylka/T. Phillips) 16 in favor, 0 opposed, 0 abstain. The motion passed.

MOTION to approve the September 7, 2014 SPSFAMMeeting Minutes (Sullivan/Devries) 16 in favor, 0 opposed, 0 abstain. The motion passed.

II.

New Working Group Pathway and Meat Species Update

Konings provided a presentation 1 on the new AOAC Working Group initiative. Konings explained the purpose of this initiative is so that any individual or entity can express the need for a method and the working group may be assembled in a timely manner outside of the overall priority topics within any panel. If there is a person or an entity who would like to address a topic immediately it may be funded completely, but generally 5-6 OAs are needed to fund a new working group. The working group would develop Standard Method Performance Requirements® (SMPRs) and present them to an existing panel for approval. Bradford added that the rationale for this move comes from trying to reduce the cost needed for a standard to be developed – if an OA needs standard developed, they now have to fund only a working group rather than an entire stakeholder panel. Konings then provided an update on the Meat Species initiative discussed at the last SPSFAM meeting. AOAC has attempted the new pathway for meat species by seeking potential OAs who may be interested in developing a standard for meat species. AOAC approached American stakeholders and received a negative response as they are currently confident in their meat supply. Efforts may continue to source OAs, but unless more interested parties are found the meat species initiative will not continue.

III.

Heavy Metals Speciation

Konings introduced Smith, Chair of the SPSFAM Heavy Metal Speciation Working Group, to present the SMPR for Arsenic Speciation. Smith provided a presentation. 2 The SMPR developed was for methods looking at speciation of arsenic species in selected food and beverages. The applicability is for Quantitation of arsenic in these matrices using IC or HPLC using mass spectrometry.
