The thiachrome reaction was developed in 1935 for the analysis of thiamine in biological matricies Thiachrome at pHs above 8.0 has a strong blue fluorescence (ex 375nm, em 432–435nm) Thiachrome analysis has been used for most of the analytical data available for the B 1 content in food. Thiachrome is used as the determinative step in the official methods of the USP, AOAC, and Food Chemical Codex as well as many others
