Make definitions of lutein and lycopene more specific The lutein definition will indicate hydroxyl groups at the 3 and 3' positions. The  lycopene definition will indicate psi, psi end groups. Methods specific to xanthophylls or carotenes Methods that can measure all carotenoids are preferred, but separate methods for the  different carotenoid classes should be considered.

Proposed changes to SMPR Definitions

• Lutein: a carotenoid containing a β‐ring hydroxylated at  the 3 position at one end and an ε‐ring hydroxylated at  the 3′ position at the opposite end .  • Lycopene: a carotenoid containing no rings at either  end. with psi‐psi end groups.
