AOAC FOOD AUTHENTICITY/FRAUD PROGRAM

Jonathan Deeds, Ph.D., U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)

Dr. Jonathan Deeds has worked at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition since 2003. He began his FDA career as a biologist in the old Office of Seafood and since 2006 has worked as a Research Biologist in the Office of Regulatory Science, Division of Analytical Chemistry, Methods Development Branch where he currently acts as a principal investigator and research coordinator for seafood. Dr. Deeds is considered a Center subject matter expert in the areas of seafood safety and seafood species identification. For this educational activity, he will be discussing past and current work at CFSAN involving the development and validation of molecular identification methods for seafood labeling and authenticity.

Jennifer Brzezinski, Ph.D., U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) Forensic Chemistry Center

Dr. Brzezinski joined the FDA in 2003. She began her career as a microbiologist in the Office of Regulatory Affairs Forensic Chemistry Center, conducting criminal case work for the FDA. Dr. Brzezinski is currently the Deputy Associate Director of the Office of Regulatory Science, Office of Research Coordination, Evaluation and Training. Dr. Brzezinski is considered a subject matter expert in molecular detection of pathogens and food authenticity. As one of the primary authors, Dr. Brzezinski will be discussing the new FDA Foods Program Guidelines for the Validation of Analytical Methods for Nucleic Acid Sequence-Based Analysis of Food, Feed, Cosmetics, and Veterinary Products.
