Food Authenticity Program Meeting Book (March 13, 2020)

Would like WG to reconsider broadening scope of commodity to include other forms of milk (e.g. milk powders). Two primary issues with focusing only on liquid raw bovine milk: 1) irrelevant to stakeholders further down the value chain who use milk powders vs raw milk; 2) Executing validation on raw milk samples will be difficult for most labs due to limited shelf life and shipping restrictions.

The original scope included all milk types and was narrowed by the working group to decrease level of complexity. Including all milk types would require method performance tables for each category. The belief was to start with liquid bovine milk and expand to other types afterward.

Remaining concerns re: anticipated challenges with raw milk commodity scope. Difficult to obtain samples for SLVs unless participating lab also dairy producer or other access to raw samples Once reach MLV, will be unable to ship raw milk internationally b/c heat treatment statement required for import/export. MLVs will be limited to labs located w/in same sovereign borders. Majority of end users of NTT method would test heat-treated milk, not raw. Limiting scope to raw milk not pragmatic.

limit SMPR scope to liquid milk since this was consensus from WG. However, propose either broadening scope to include raw and heat- treated milk or revising scope to exclude raw and include heat treated only.

Excellent point. I will propose adjusting the scope to heat- treated milk.
